The Bongwe family has captured national attention following the remarkable academic and leadership achievements of three siblings who excelled at some of South Africa’s top schools and internationally renowned institutions.
Brothers Sazi Bongwe and Menzi Bongwe recently went viral for their exceptional performances at St John’s College in Johannesburg. Sazi served as Head of School in 2021, while his younger brother Menzi was appointed Second Prefect in 2025. Both brothers achieved nine distinctions in matric, each attaining an average of over 90%.
Further investigations have revealed that academic excellence runs deep within the Bongwe family. Their older sister, Bongiwe Bongwe, was Head Girl at St Mary’s Waverley in 2015, where she matriculated with five distinctions and ranked in the top 1% nationally.
Bongiwe went on to study at Drew University in New Jersey, earning a place on the Dean’s List, before completing a Master of Science degree at Georgetown University in Washington DC. At just 27 years old, she is currently working as an Associate at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in Washington.
Their father, Stanley Bongwe, is an Industrial Psychologist and author, and the Founder and Director of The Diversity Institute, a Johannesburg-based specialist firm established 27 years ago.
Stanley Bongwe holds multiple academic qualifications obtained in South Africa and the United States, including a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, a Bachelor of Science (BSc) Honours degree, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Human Resources Development.
The achievements of the Bongwe siblings have been widely celebrated, with many applauding their discipline, leadership qualities and the role played by their parents in fostering a strong culture of academic excellence.
