Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala Transferred to Super Maximum Prison in Kokstad

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed that alleged cartel-linked figure and attempted murder accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has been transferred to a super maximum correctional facility in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, DCS said Matlala was moved from Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre (C-MAX) in Pretoria to eBongweni Correctional Centre, a high-security facility designed to house dangerous and high-risk offenders.

The department described the transfer as a standard operational procedure, emphasising that inmate movements are routinely informed by security, safety and operational considerations.

| “What has to be emphasised is that transfer of remand detainees and sentenced offenders between correctional facilities is a standard operational practice which is informed by a range of considerations, primarily security, safety, operational requirements, and effective inmate management across the correctional system,” said DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo.

Nxumalo further stressed that the transfer does not affect Matlala’s legal standing or access to services.

| “It has to be stated as well that the transfer of an inmate does not prejudice their legal rights or access to services,” he added.

Matlala remains in custody as legal proceedings against him continue.
