A suspect wanted in connection with the murders of two KwaZulu-Natal Crime Intelligence officers was fatally shot during a gun battle with police in Inanda on Friday morning.
According to information from the scene, the suspect allegedly first sent his wife and children out of the house to safety before confronting the police officers who had surrounded the property.
A firefight then broke out between the suspect and police.
A member of the South African Police Service’s Special Task Force was wounded during the confrontation. Initial information indicates that the officer was struck by a bullet in the hand. Police have confirmed that a Special Task Force member sustained injuries during the operation.
The suspect was wanted in connection with the April murders of Crime Intelligence officers Captain Louis Nel and Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo, who were ambushed in Mount Edgecombe.
Nel was killed at the scene, while Khuzwayo later died in hospital from his gunshot wounds.
The operation resulted in the suspect being fatally wounded.
Police have also arrested five suspects in connection with the broader investigation, according to preliminary information.
The operation remains under investigation as police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shootout.
