At least 11 people have been killed and three others wounded after gunmen opened fire on a group of people inside a house in the Ziko area of KwaMakhutha, south of Durban, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Fourteen people were reportedly shot in the attack, with a pregnant woman among the victims.
According to preliminary information, the group was together at the house before 11pm when armed men rushed into the property and opened fire.
At least 11 victims were killed in the shooting, while three others survived with gunshot wounds.
KwaMakhutha SAPS and the eThekwini District Tracing Team are at the scene as investigators begin working to establish what happened and identify those responsible.
Given the scale and seriousness of the attack, the case is expected to be escalated to a provincial police unit, with an urgent focus on tracking down the gunmen.
The motive for the mass shooting has not yet been established.
