A man identified as Yanga Ngayi has been arrested after allegedly storming into an AFM Church in Cape Town while armed with what appeared to be a firearm.
The incident reportedly took place during a church service on Sunday, leaving congregants shocked and fearing for their safety.
According to information provided by police, Ngayi allegedly entered the church and robbed worshippers of their cellphones before making off with the church’s sound equipment.
Following his arrest, Ngayi reportedly confessed to the robbery and informed investigators that the stolen items had already been sold.
Police further allege that the suspect admitted that the firearm used during the robbery was not a real gun but a toy gun designed to resemble a genuine firearm.
Despite the claim, authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident and the recovery of the stolen property.
The robbery has raised concerns about the safety of places of worship, with congregants reportedly left traumatised after the armed intrusion.
Ngayi is expected to appear in court on charges related to robbery as investigations continue.
