Police have arrested a 35-year-old Mozambican national after he was allegedly found in possession of ammunition during an operation in Barberton.
According to police, the suspect was found with 10 rounds of ammunition and was arrested for the unlawful possession of ammunition.
During further operations in a separate area, officers discovered an additional 539 rounds of ammunition that had apparently been abandoned. No arrests were made in connection with the second discovery, and police are still investigating who may have been in possession of the ammunition.
The total seizure of 549 rounds of ammunition has raised concerns about the possible movement of illegal firearms and ammunition in the area.
The Mozambican national is expected to appear in court on charges related to the unlawful possession of ammunition, while investigations continue into the origin and intended destination of the ammunition that was recovered.
Police have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests.
