A Johannesburg police constable, Thato Sandile Zwane, has been arrested after allegedly stealing equipment belonging to a fellow officer from inside a police station.
According to reports, a female police officer discovered that her locker had been broken into and several items were missing. The stolen items allegedly included a wristwatch, three bulletproof vests, handcuffs, two holsters, pepper sprays and magazine pouches.
An investigation was launched and CCTV footage was reviewed. It is alleged that the footage showed Zwane in possession of the missing items.
Police later located Zwane hiding in the basement of the police station. Authorities reportedly found him after noticing that he remained on the premises long after his shift had ended.
When questioned about why he was still at the station, Zwane allegedly failed to provide an explanation.
He has since been arrested and is expected to face charges relating to theft and the unlawful possession of police equipment.
The incident has raised concerns about security within police facilities and the safeguarding of official equipment.
