Phakel’umthakathi Claims R1 Million Has Been Raised to Fund an Assassination Plot Against Him

Controversial activist Phakel’umthakathi has claimed that a group of Somali business owners in Nongoma have allegedly raised R1 million to pay a hitman to kill him.

Phakel’umthakathi made the allegations while addressing supporters during a march in Harding on Sunday.

According to him, information has come to his attention that money has allegedly been collected to fund an assassination plot against him amid ongoing tensions surrounding his activism and views on foreign-owned businesses.

No evidence supporting the claim was presented publicly during the march, and the allegations have not been independently verified.

It is also unclear whether any formal complaint has been lodged with law enforcement authorities regarding the alleged threat.

The claims are likely to further fuel debate around tensions involving local business owners, foreign nationals and community activism in parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
