A KwaZulu-Natal police Warrant Officer has been arrested after allegedly accepting a R5,000 bribe and helping three inmates escape from custody at KwaMsane Police Station.
According to police, the inmates escaped from the station’s holding cells on 27 February 2024 after cutting through steel burglar bars and a roof sheet.
Investigators allege that the escape was orchestrated by a Detective Warrant Officer who supplied the inmates with a steel saw to facilitate their getaway. The officer is also accused of receiving R5,000 from the suspects in exchange for his assistance.
One of the escapees, Sibusiso Gumede>, was rearrested a month later during a roadblock operation in Vryheid.
Following an extensive investigation by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, a warrant for the officer’s arrest was issued and he was taken into custody on 29 May 2026.
The officer is expected to appear before the KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court on 2 June 2026. He faces charges of aiding and abetting an escape from lawful custody, defeating the ends of justice, and corruption.
Police say the arrest highlights ongoing efforts to root out corruption within law enforcement and ensure that officers who abuse their positions are held accountable.
