KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says the work of law enforcement officers should never be misunderstood as a pursuit of fame, recognition or accolades, stressing that their duty is to serve the people of South Africa.
Speaking following his recognition as South Africa’s 2025 Newsmaker of the Year, Mkhwanazi emphasised that the award should not be misinterpreted, saying police officers do not carry out their responsibilities for public praise.
“The duties of law enforcement personnel are not executed for the purpose of receiving accolades or recognition,” Mkhwanazi said, adding that their work is rooted in a commitment to protecting citizens and upholding justice.
Referring to 6 July, a date that drew national attention to developments surrounding policing and crime fighting, Mkhwanazi said: “July 6 was not an exercise in popularity. It was an act of duty.”
The provincial top cop also called for what he described as a “spring cleaning” of the criminal justice system, saying accountability and reform must cut across all sectors of society.
His remarks come as he continues to dominate national headlines over his role in tackling organised crime and high-profile investigations.
