Just months after arriving as the replacement for Muvhango, drama series Pimville has hit a major setback after the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced that the show has been discontinued from its weekly slot on SABC 2.
The broadcaster says the decision follows ongoing issues with production company Bakwena Productions, including what it described as “unresolved contractual obligations and breaches.”
The move comes after months of reported salary disputes, with actors and crew allegedly not being paid since February 2026, eventually leading workers to refuse to continue filming earlier this month.
The telenovela featured a star-studded cast including Gail Mabalane, Thapelo Mokoena, Matli Mohapeloa, Michelle Mosalakae, Jesse Suntele, and Keke Mphuthi, among others.
In a statement, the SABC described the situation as “deeply regrettable,” acknowledging the efforts of the cast, crew and everyone involved in the production, while also thanking viewers and partners for their support.
As part of its contingency plan, the broadcaster confirmed that repeat episodes of Season 2 of Amalanga Awafani will now air in Pimville’s former 21:00 slot on SABC 2.
Despite the sudden cancellation, the SABC hinted that there may still be hope for the drama, saying the current pause “does not necessarily mean the end of Pimville”, with future options still being considered.
