President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa and its government have committed R81 million ($5 million) to assist in the fight against the ongoing Ebola outbreak affecting parts of Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.
The funding will be channelled through the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention> (Africa CDC) to strengthen efforts aimed at containing the spread of the deadly virus.
The latest announcement marks a significant increase from the initial pledge, after earlier reports indicated that South Africa planned to contribute $2.5 million (about R41.2 million).
Ramaphosa said the increased contribution reflects the country’s commitment to supporting continental health responses and helping African nations combat public health emergencies.
The Ebola outbreak has raised growing concern, particularly in the DRC and Uganda, where health authorities continue efforts to contain infections and prevent further spread.
