The South Africa has donated R41.2 million (US$2.5 million) to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to support efforts aimed at combating the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
The funding is expected to assist the Africa CDC in strengthening emergency response measures, including disease surveillance, treatment efforts, outbreak containment and support for affected health systems.
The move comes as health authorities continue battling the spread of Ebola in parts of DRC and Uganda, where cases and deaths linked to the deadly virus have raised concern across the continent.
South Africa’s financial contribution forms part of broader continental efforts to strengthen Africa’s response to infectious disease outbreaks and prevent cross-border spread.
The Africa CDC plays a key role in coordinating public health responses among African countries during disease outbreaks and health emergencies.
