The National Prosecuting Authority has confirmed the charges facing self-proclaimed SAPS informant Brown Mogotsi, following his recent arrest.
According to the NPA, Mogotsi is facing the following charges:
- Unlawful possession of a firearm
- Unlawful possession of ammunition
- Discharging a firearm in a built-up area
- Defeating the ends of justice
- Perjury
The NPA alleges that Mogotsi made a false statement under oath in an affidavit signed before a commissioner of oaths, in which he claimed that unknown gunmen had shot at his vehicle in an alleged assassination attempt.
Following the report, police launched an investigation into what was initially treated as an attempted murder case.
However, investigators later allegedly uncovered evidence suggesting that Mogotsi had deliberately stopped his vehicle, exited while armed, and fired multiple shots at his own car, before reporting the incident to authorities.
The allegations have added a dramatic twist to a case that first surfaced after Mogotsi claimed he had narrowly escaped an attack in Vosloorus.
Mogotsi remains in custody after the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court postponed his bail application to Monday, 25 May 2026, meaning he will spend another week behind bars.
