KwaZulu-Natal MEC Siboniso Duma has sharply criticised undocumented foreign nationals, describing the issue as “a thorn in the throat” following a devastating fire at Quarry Road informal settlement.
The fire destroyed a large number of shacks, leaving residents displaced and in distress. According to preliminary accounts, the blaze allegedly started at a structure occupied by a foreign national, who reportedly fled the scene after the fire broke out.
Communities in the area are now mourning their losses, with many left without shelter as the damage continues to be assessed.
Duma links incident to broader concerns
Duma said incidents like this highlight growing concerns around undocumented foreign nationals, particularly those who allegedly evade accountability after causing harm.
He added that the debate around illegal immigration is intensifying, with the phrase #NenzaniLaEzweni (What are you doing in this country?) becoming central to public discourse.
The MEC further raised concerns about foreign nationals occupying or renting out RDP houses, as well as individuals who illegally sell government-subsidised homes and lease them to undocumented occupants.
Calls for stronger enforcement
Duma indicated that authorities will increasingly focus on addressing these issues, signalling a tougher stance on illegal occupation of housing and immigration compliance.
The incident has once again brought attention to the intersection of housing shortages, informal settlements, and immigration, as tensions continue to rise in affected communities.
