Ramaphosa Suspends Masemola, Spotlight on Acting Police Chief Puleng Dimpane

President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola — but the bigger shift may be who is now taking over.

Meet the New Acting Police Commissioner

Puleng Dimpane has been appointed as the Acting National Commissioner of SAPS with immediate effect.

Dimpane is not a newcomer:

  • She is currently the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of SAPS
  • She has over 20 years of experience within the police service
  • She holds a Bachelor of Commerce and an Honours degree in Business Administration

She has also played a visible role in recent years, appearing before Parliament on issues of police finances, corruption, and accountability, where she emphasised that wrongdoing within SAPS must be dealt with decisively.

Why Her Appointment Matters

Her appointment comes at a critical time:

  • SAPS is facing serious credibility challenges
  • There is increasing scrutiny over financial management and corruption
  • Leadership stability is under pressure

Ramaphosa indicated that restoring public trust and integrity in law enforcement is a key priority behind recent decisions.

Masemola’s Suspension

Masemola’s suspension is linked to criminal charges tied to the controversial R360 million SAPS tender involving Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala.

He has denied wrongdoing, but the Presidency says the suspension is necessary to allow the legal process to unfold without interference.
