Twenty-one people have been killed in a devastating collision involving three vehicles on the N1 between Prince Albert Road and Leeu-Gamka in the Western Cape.
The crash occurred at approximately 11.30pm on Sunday, 13 September 2026, and involved two Toyota Quantum minibuses and a Suzuki Brezza SUV.
The Western Cape Department of Mobility initially confirmed 18 deaths and three people with serious injuries. The death toll was later revised to 21.
Emergency services and traffic officials remained at the scene on Monday morning as they attended to the wreckage and conducted investigations. The N1 was closed in both directions, resulting in significant delays.
Motorists were advised to avoid the affected section and use an alternative route through Prince Albert Road Station, along the R407 towards the N12 and then towards Beaufort West. The diversion adds approximately 200 kilometres to the journey.
The cause of the collision has not yet been confirmed.
